Dairy cattle exported to Indonesia on MV Ocean Swagman

June 16, 2011

Wellard has exported 680 dairy cattle from Townsville, Queensland, to Jakarta, Indonesia.

The dairy cattle are currently in transit between Australia and Indonesia, on board the MV Ocean Swagman, a technologically advanced livestock vessel launched by Wellard in early 2010.

The 2.5-year-old dairy heifers have been bought by a large dairy in Indonesia, for breeding and milk production.

“Australian dairy cattle are sought after throughout the world for their high performance, which provides an important marketing option for Australian dairy farmers. This market is even more important now dairy farmers are facing reduced income as a result of the retail milk price wars,” Wellard Rural Exports Managing Director Steve Meerwald said.

“They are high quality breeding cattle, shipped on state of the art vessels and will be looked after at a modern, professional Indonesian dairy for the next 6-8 years.”

An accredited Australian stockman is accompanying the voyage, to care for the cattle.

The dairy heifers were approved for export by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service. The consignment was not affected by the current suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia which is limited to feeder cattle only.
The MV Ocean Swagman entered service in January 2010. The ship was constructed with a dual independent propulsion system which provides unparalleled levels of safety for the livestock, crew and vessel.
